Payroll Administrator

In larger companies entry level Payroll roles will be a full time administrators, where you have many thousands of employees to process. In smaller companies, payroll may be one part of an Office Administrator or Office Manager role.

Payroll Advisor/Officer

Payroll Specialist/Team Leader

This type of role only exists in larger payroll teams, often In a larger corporate. You may become one of several team leaders with 2 - 6 direct reports, with your position reporting into a Payroll Manager. Alternatively you may be a Payroll Specialist or Consultant with coaching and supervision responsibilities.

You can work for many years at this level as depending on the company and industry, there are many different issues where legislation has to be applied appropriately and different payroll systems and processes to use.

In small companies a Payroll Manager may have 1 - 4 direct reports, so is similar to a Team Leader role in a large company - however is also responsbile for signing off the Payroll.

In larger companies Payroll Managers may manage up to 20 payroll people or more. This means that a Payroll Manager role can be quite different in scope depending on the size of your company - however the key responsibilities are similar.

This role is not covered in the Hays Salary Survey, however most closely equates to a Payroll Manager role.


250  - 500 employees = $60,000 - $80,000. Median $75,000.


500+ employees = $70,000 - $100,000.  Median $85,000

A Payroll Administrator role will pay between $45,000 - $60,000 per annum.


In Auckland the median salary is  $50,000.


Wellington/Christchurch - the median salary is  $55,000.

Up to 250 employees = $55,000 - $70,000. Median $65,000.


250  - 500 employees = $60,000 - $80,000. Median $75,000.

In large corporate's with 1000+ employees, the salary band can range from $90,000 to $140,000.

Payroll as a function sits either in HR or finance and payroll roles can differ because of this. The size of the company also dictates how broad payroll roles can be. In larger companies a payroll career path includes roles as a Payroll Advisor, to being a Specialist, to signing off a payroll, to managing a team or becoming a strategic payroll partner. There is also cross over into HR systems, data and analytics and remuneration.
