The Employment Relations Act

HR, Payroll and Talent Professionals need to know how to apply the points of the Employment Relations Act when offering employment or knowing which provisions apply to which employees.

Module 1: Types of Employees


This module covers understanding the different types of workers including part timer, casuals, fixed termers, temps and independent contractors and the issues to know about each.

Module 2: Using trial periods


This module covers the legal provisions around using trial periods so that they are enforceable and how to handle the different issues that can occur if you need to end employment.

Module 5: Zero Hours and Casuals


This module covers understanding the difference between casuals and part time flexible workers. It covers how available hours work and the issues around managing these agreements.


Module 6: Collectives & Unions


This module covers the legal provisions around bargaining for a collective employment agreements and paying correctly. It also covers union access to your workplace.  

Module 7: Strikes & Lockouts


This module covers the provisions and case law for strikes and lockouts during collective bargaining and how to overcome the challenges that can arise.

The Holidays Act

HR and Payroll Professionals need to advise managers correctly on leave, have the right policies and procedures in place and pay correctly when people do take leave.

Module 1: Annual Leave


This module covers understanding annual leave provisions and conditions under the Holidays Act. It also covers how to apply these provisions to different situations and policies and processes to have in place.

Module 2: Public Holidays


This module covers understanding public holiday (statutory leave) provisions and conditions under the Holidays Act. It also covers how to apply these provisions to different situations and policies and processes to have in place.

Module 3: Sick Leave


This module covers understanding sick leave provisions and conditions under the Holidays Act. It also covers how to apply these provisions to different situations and policies and processes to have in place.

Module 4: Bereavement Leave


This module covers understanding bereavement leave provisions and how to apply these provisions to different situations and policies and processes to have in place.

Module 5: Other types of leave


This module covers understanding the other types of leave that aren’t covered by the Holidays Act, but may be offered in your business, and how to implement and pay these correctly.

Module 6: Leave Policies


This module covers the different leave policies that can be useful to have in your organisation, and case law related to the different types of leave.

Module 7: Leave Calculations


This module covers how to make the correct leave calculations for the different types of leave for both regular and non-regular employees.

Module 8: Medical Certificates


This module covers the legal provisions around medical certificates, as well as how to work through a process to get a Medical Certificate.

Employment Relations

HR Professionals must know the legal requirements and correct process for dealing with a number of employment relations issues, acting in good faith and reaching a reasonable outcome for their organisation.

Module 1: Disciplinary Processes


This module covers the steps you must work through during a disciplinary procedure for either performance or misconduct, and the legal provisions you must comply with.

Module 2: Dismissals


This module covers the steps you must take if you are considering dismissing an employee after a disciplinary process. It covers the legislation, case law and issues HR professionals must consider.

Module 3: Restructuring


This module covers the legal provisions and case law that apply when you are working through a restructure, as well as the steps you must take and the issues that you must consider to act in good faith.

Module 4: Personal Grievances


This module covers the legal provisions around an employee taking a personal grievance, the different categories and the steps you must take as an employer.

Module 5: Mediation


This module covers how mediation works, the steps you must take if you or an employee requests mediation, and how to prepare and what to expect during the mediation process.

Module 6: Negotiating Settlements


This module covers the legal provisions around settlements, and the steps you should take and issues to consider when negotiating a settlement agreement.

Module 7: Dealing with Bullying


This module covers the legal definitions and requirements around bullying and harassment, and the steps to take when you are investigating a complaint.

Module 8: Medical Incapacity


This module covers the legal provisions and case law around working through a medical incapacity situation with an employee, and the issues that you must consider.

The APPNZ HR Training Programme runs over 12 months.


Each week there is a recorded briefing that you can watch either individually or as a team, and then complete the practical exercises to test your knowledge or skills. These exercises can be either completed online, or if you are a Manager running the programme with your team, these can be printed off and completed as a team.


Once you have completed the programme you can apply to be a Certified Member of APPNZ.


The Parental Leave Act

HR and Payroll Professionals need to know the legislative requirements for parental leave, and how to follow the correct processes when an employee goes on or returns from any type of parental leave.

Module 1: Types of Parental Leave


This module covers understanding the different types of parental leave provisions (primary carer leave, partner leave and extended leave) and the legal requirements around each.

Module 2: Taking Parental Leave


This module covers the provisions and process when someone is going on the different types of parental leave - who pays what, and how.

Module 3: Returning from Parental Leave


This module covers the provisions and process when someone is returning from the different types of parental leave - who pays what, and how. It also covers dealing with issues that can occur.

Completing the programme costs $1,995 + GST for non members or $1.500 + GST for Student or Affiliated Members.

Module 3: Employment Agreements


This module covers the HR, payroll and legal issues around different type of clauses in an employment agreement, like confidentiality, termination, payments, restraints, leave and more.

Module 4: Meal Breaks and Flexible Work


This module covers understanding the legal provisions and payments around meal breaks and allowances, as well as provisions around flexible work.
